A Few of Our Favorite… Recipes!

Nothing says the holidays like the smell of Grandma’s apple pie baking perfectly in the oven as family gathers to celebrate the festivities or turkey on the table with lots of stuffing! The holidays are all about traditions: from the ornaments hung on the tree, to the jolly singing of Christmas Carols. Traditions even include the tasty treats on the table!  We liked these Bucks Country Gardens-approved recipes so much we decided to repeat this blog from 2016!

Nancy McIlvaine – Stromboli

We have a family tradition where on Christmas we always make homemade Stromboli as an appetizer.  Now that all the nieces and nephews and their families have had it, they want it every holiday…It is that good. Plus, it’s easy to make and you can add veggies to it if you’d like.



Frozen white bread or pizza dough thawed and ¼ cup tavern ham

¼ Cup Sharp Provolone Cheese

¼ Cup Sliced Pepperoni

Parmesan Cheese


Garlic Powder


• Roll out dough to 12” x 18” on a large cookie sheet covered with parchment paper.

• Sprinkle rolled out dough with oregano, garlic powder and parmesan.

• Layer the ham then provolone cheese then pepperoni sprinkle again with parmesan.

• Roll up loosely, leaving room to seal the edge.

• Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes on the center rack.

My family looks forward to this recipe every Christmas morning. And, to make it even easier, we assemble it the day before!


1 Bag of Bread Cubed Stuffing

8 Eggs

2 Cups of Milk

2 Cups of Shredded Swiss Cheese

1 Bag of Ham Cubes or About 3 -4 Cups

1 Cup Chopped Onions


• Butter a 9×13 deep dish baking pan- make sure it’s not glass.

• Layer all of the bread cubes, next is the onions, all of the ham and top with all of the cheese.

• Beat eggs, salt and pepper to taste, add milk and mix.

• Pour mixture all over the top, cover, and refrigerate over night.

• Bake at 350 for 1 hour and 15 minutes.

• Take the cover off the last 15 minutes so that it gets golden on top!

Patti Carr- Cinnamon- Apple Cake

This is my family’s favorite recipe this time of year. We make three or four during the holidays. In fact, we just made one yesterday, and it’s so easy to make!


1 ¾ Cups sugar, divided

½ Cup stick margarine, softened

1 Teaspoon vanilla extract

6 Ounces block-style fat-free cream cheese, softened (about 3/4 cup)

2 Large eggs

1 ½ Cups all-purpose flour

1 ½ Teaspoons baking powder

¼ Teaspoon salt

2 Teaspoons ground cinnamon

3 Cups chopped peeled Rome apple (about 2 large)

Cooking spray


• Beat 1 1/2 cups sugar, margarine, vanilla, and cream cheese at medium speed of a mixer until well-blended (about 4 minutes). Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition.

• Combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Add flour mixture to creamed mixture, beating at low speed until blended.

• Combine 1/4 cup sugar and cinnamon. Combine 2 tablespoons cinnamon mixture and apple in a bowl, and stir apple mixture into batter. Pour batter into an 8-inch spring form pan coated with cooking spray, and sprinkle with remaining cinnamon mixture.

• Bake at 350° for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until the cake pulls away from the sides of the pan. Cool the cake completely on a wire rack, and cut using a serrated knife.

Darryl Richard- Fruit Cheesecake Squares

The perfect way to finish off your holiday supper!


For Cookie Crust

1 ¾ Cups all-purpose flour

½ Cup confectioner’s sugar

½ Tsp. salt

For Cheesecake Filing

2(8oz.) Packages cream cheese, softened

½ Cup sugar

1 Tsp. Pure vanilla extract

2 Large eggs, slightly beaten

1 Cup Stonewall Kitchen jam, jelly or marmalade


• Preheat oven to 350 degrees grease a 9” x 13” pan.

• Place flour, sugar and salt in a food processor and pulse. Add butter and process until the dough begins to form a ball, adding ice water if necessary.

• Press dough evenly over the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake until crust is lightly golden, about 20 minutes.  Let cool for 30 minutes. While cooling, prepare filling.

• Mix softened cream cheese, sugar and vanilla until well blended. Then add eggs and mix until incorporated.

• Pour cheesecake filling evenly over the cooled crust. Spoon jam randomly on top of the filling and then swirl with a knife.

• Bake for approximately 35-45 minutes or until center is set. Allow to cool in pan, cut and serve.

The holidays are more than just receiving gifts or what you did or did not get underneath  the Christmas tree. This year, I challenge every single one of you to remember the true meaning of Christmas and to enjoy the time spent with your loved ones.
