When you've been planting trees as long as we have at Bucks Country Gardens, you get a first-hand idea of what works and what doesn't. There are certain trees that consistently land on our list of favorites since we started this business over 40 years ago. We also favor several trees that are relatively new hybrids which have proven to be far superior to their older counterparts.
Our criteria are simple: Is it a tree that thrives in our climate and soil conditions, and is it beautiful? Early spring is the time of year when many trees are in their greatest glory and splendor. See our picks for sun, shade and deer resistance.
The original member of The Knock Out® Family. This shrub rose set a new standard in disease resistance with little to no maintenance required. The bloom cycle produces rich cherry red/hot pink blooms that will continue until the first hard frost. Black spot resistant, drought tolerant and self-cleaning, this rose suits every garden and every lifestyle. This incredible bloomer grows about 3’ to 4’ high and wide.
Delaware Valley White Azalea flowers in spring and early summer. It's one of few Azaleas that are evergreen, so they keep their beautiful green foliage through the winter. The large, 2.5-inch single to semi-double white blossoms blankets the shrub, giving a classic, formal look. Use it to complement your home and to add contrast to your landscape. Makes a great backdrop for annuals and perennials. As a shrub, it is on the smaller side, 3-4 feet and the same in width. This makes it a good accent in a large garden or a cozy corner. It also mixes well in a border of more colorful azaleas.
This all year beauty has foliage with the same shape as classic oak trees, turning bright red, yellow, orange and burgundy in autumn. There are large flowers that attract birds and hummingbirds and it is easy care and even thrives in drier areas. This hydrangea performs quite well in less humid soil. In fact, it quite detests “wet feet” and finds excellent drainage a necessity. The Oakleaf hydrangea variety deserves to be shown off for both leaf shape and the pyramid-shaped blossoms. You will love this lustrous, white-blossoming hydrangea.
Pink Diamond is a new hydrangea that was bred from the popular PeeGee line of hydrangeas, but without the problems of PeeGee. The flowers mature to a pretty pink color, hence the name, and they stay that way all the way through until frosts arrive. It barely reaches ten feet at maturity, which makes it a stunning back of the border shrub that that is attractive all the way though hot summer days. These trouble free shrubs are not bothered by droughts or late frosts, nor are they generally stricken with any bugs. Your only maintenance is just an optional light prune after the flush of flowers if you choose to reduce the size slightly.
Little Princess Spirea is popular for a good reason--this accent shrub is adaptable, hardy and exquisite. You can plant this colorful, dense shrub anywhere in your landscape that needs a little life. With so many traits all wrapped up in one low-maintenance beauty, it’s no wonder she’s named Little Princess. This Spirea will mature to about 2-3 feet in height with a 3 foot spread, so it can easily be tucked into a small corner of your garden for big impact. Princess Spirea typically fills out well from top to bottom, so there’s no need for filler plants in front of it.
The butterfly bush is notable for its ease of care and high level of tolerance. Its rapid growth will give you 4-6 feet in height and 4-5 feet in width in a short time. This deep violet blossoming shrub performs well as a deciduous hedge. It tends to be less neat and tidy than other shrubs, but its blooms will bring delight from midsummer to fall. Flowers appear on new growth, so the shrub can be pruned to the ground in the spring. The plant quickly rebounds by blooming time. Little maintenance and full sun...at least 6 hours a day...will foster more flowers. This plant will give you much pleasure from just a few deep waterings in the summer.
